Coquette

"Coquette"
mixed media on canvas
72x72 inches
2009

This piece was ready and waiting to come out as soon as I grabbed the paint. After several weeks--maybe that is an exaggeration as I have lost track of when I painted last--I got right to this one yesterday with only minor tweaks today to finish it. It's now off the wall and waiting to be stretched so I can start another one with the last piece of canvas from that roll. I didn't think I'd be able to work on canvas again after finishing the recent commission "Aphrodite's Epiphany" but all is humming along.

tidal wave

"tidal wave"
2009
mixed media on birch plywood
18x48 in.

I painted this weeks ago when I was running on a semi regular basis. With me, running brings on restless leg syndrome and I find myself dealing with an excess of electricity running through my legs. It is something I don't mind so much during the day but I find that at night it can be challenging. I can only attribute this work to what I was going through at the time. I am sure I have painted this sensation of electrical current in other forms, mostly abstract, but this time it expressed itself this way.

Three Ravens Gallery Preview

This Friday evening from 4 pm to 9 pm, Three Ravens Gallery will welcome friends and family into the space where we have arranged artwork collected from around the globe. Some work belongs to the gallery, collected long before Three Ravens was born, other work will be available to purchase. We are anticipating a wonderful and inspiring event. I hope you enjoy the video generously created by UK artist, Sophie Shapiro who is also exhibiting at Three Ravens. Feel free to follow the Three Ravens blog to be informed of current events.

Aphrodite's Epiphany

"Aphrodite's Epiphany"
64x82 inches
mixed media on canvas
2009

This is a commissioned piece that I have been working on for a few months at least. It went through many transformations before settling here. I am very happy with it... it was a freeing work to do.

variation on a theme

"variation on a theme"
2009
30x30 in.

This piece started out as a landscape in horizontal form but I turned it to finish it which turned it into more of a figure, depending on your perspective. The focus was less on form and more on the atmosphere of color and textures.

in praise of woman

"in praise of woman"
20x20 in.
2009
mixed media on birch plywood

I have been working more figuratively in recent works ... this is another one. For me these paintings reflect a feeling of materializing form from nothingness with color and line the expression of the energy sustaining the image. Of course this is true with everything but have applied it specifically to the feminine subject.

Three Ravens Gallery

It is so wonderful to be able to say I have a gallery now! The dream has come true and it has landed right here, only a handful of minutes from my house. The new gallery, Three Ravens, is located in Ardmore, PA, just around the corner from Suburban Square and only 15 minutes from Philadelphia.

The gallery will showcase the work of contemporary emerging international artists, some of whom follow this blog, and others whom I have met through flickr.com and have become wonderful friends. I encourage anyone who is interested in following the artists and gallery activities to visit the blog at http://threeravensgallery.blogspot.com/. Three Ravens is comprised of myself, Rich Machen (aka sailing634 on flickr), and daughter, Allison Machen.

Below are a few shots taken of the space prior to our moving in.... but the art work is coming in and new pics will be posted shortly. It is coming together beautifully !

yes, we have access to the greenhouse and plan to use it for outdoor receptions

the interior is a good size, with plenty of light and wall space. those black dividers are gone.
